There are so many things to consider when you decide to give your business a logo. It can be a long and arduous process, but it needs to be. Your logo is with your business forever, and if it’s not perfect, forever can be a long time.
Below are three important factors in the planning of your new business logo.
Hire a professional
The worst thing a business owner can do is try to build their own logo.
If you’re a marketing or graphic design guru, that’s okay. If you’re not, leave it to the experts. Graphic designers are the go-to people to develop a logo for your business.
Not only can they help with ideas, but they can also provide you with several different variations for use in different applications. Your logo doesn’t have to be the same for every use, it should just use the same components. A graphic designer can supply you with a landscape and portrait version of your logo, as well as a black and white version and an inverted version. This is generally not something that can easily be achieved at home by someone who’s not a professional.
The results of a poorly executed logo can be disastrous and can even reflect badly on your business.
Make sure it represents your business
Whether you have a small business or are part of a large corporate, branding is important. But the most important part is making sure your branding reflects your image.
A logo is more than just words, symbols or lines. It’s a part of something greater and more significant. It represents the business in some way, even if abstractly. You should always consider each part of your logo as something bigger than just an image. For example, if your business is made up of three owners who started the business from scratch 50 years ago, why not incorporate three of something into the logo? It’s small, subtle things like this that make a logo truly represent what you stand for.
It pays to think of things like that, as well as favourite colours and fonts before going to a marketing or branding business for help.
Receive all versions of the logos
If you’re heavily involved in advertising, signage and other such forms of getting your business in the public eye, you need many file types.
A simple JPG will not do. When you receive your logo from your graphic designer, request the following:
- The entire logo packaged and sent as a zip file.
- .jpg
- .ai
- .png
These file types are often essential for branding and are preferred versions by many sign writers and digital printers.
The completed packaged file is also handy to have for your records, should you ever need to send it to a different graphic designer for alteration. Make sure you store your logo files in a safe place for use now and into the future.
